It was a long day at the Dubuque County Democratic Convention. I arrived at 9 AM and got my credentials as a delegate. The convention started in earnest about 11 AM with discussion of the democratic platform and interruptions for guest speakers. We also managed to vote for delegates to the district and state conventions. After a lunch of turkey and dressing sandwiches, we assembled to finish discussing and voting on the platform. After four hours and only two more planks discussed and passed, the platform was tabled and sent back to the platform committee to finalize.
With a lot of discussion – some rancorous and heated, we managed to get business done and adjourned at 4:30 PM.
I came home exhausted. However, I learned a lot about hands on politics.
